"Oh, *wonderful*," Mrs. Petrov muttered, eyeing the oversized fruit basket that had just arrived. It was from Tiffany, the girl who had repeatedly failed her English Literature class. A girl who had, more than once, accused Mrs. Petrov of being "unfair." The basket, overflowing with exotic fruits, smelled sickeningly sweet.

She poked a mango with a sharp fingernail, the gesture a clear reflection of the anger building inside her. The note, attached with a satin ribbon, was nauseating. “Thank you for everything, Mrs. Petrov! You truly changed my life.” She snorted, imagining the girl’s vapid, ungrammatical prose.

The basket sat on her kitchen counter, a bright, unwanted presence. The fruit was already starting to rot. She’d probably have to throw it away, and it's thoughtless extravagance was another jab to her.
