The weight of the paper felt heavy in Maya's hands, heavier than the disappointment that swelled in her. She'd aced every quiz, participated in every discussion, yet here she was, staring at a B-. She balled the paper in her fist, the edges digging into her palm. The professor had to be mistaken.

She pushed her chair back with a screech, the sound grating on her ears. It was all a complete joke. She would email her, of course. She would demand an explanation.

Walking through the quad she saw the couples laughing and holding hands. They had probably aced their exams.
