The scent of lavender, usually so comforting, now made her stomach churn. It was the soap he used, a smell that, just moments before, had been synonymous with him. Now, reading through the novel – a fictionalized account of their relationship, thinly disguised as a thriller – it was the smell of deception. The story presented her as a manipulative siren, using her charm to exploit him. Her hands began to tremble. Her nails dug into her palms, leaving half-moons of red. She felt as though something in her had broken.
