The accusations bounced off Ethan like raindrops on a perfectly waxed car. He sat in the stuffy office, a faint smile playing on his lips. Plagiarism? He had spent weeks immersed in the primary sources, devouring them. He knew the subject better than the professor.

He crossed one ankle over the other, nonchalantly. “I understand your concerns,” he said, his voice level and composed. “But I assure you, my research is entirely original. Perhaps you'd like to discuss the specific passages in question?” He gestured toward the offending document with a graceful flick of his wrist.

He could practically taste the victory already. He'd done nothing wrong. The professor was going to be embarrassed.
