The principal, a nervous man, called for a meeting. Maria, arriving late, immediately felt the tension in the air. The subject: her daughter's disruptive behavior in class. Maria was not intimidated. She was used to dealing with far worse.

As the principal and Ms. Davies, the teacher, explained the situation, Maria remained calm. She listened carefully, but when they finished, she cut to the chase. She had a plan, a strategy. She'd seen this before. She laid out the steps, explaining how it would fix the situation. The principal seemed relieved. Ms. Davies, a young woman, was stunned.
