The gala was in full swing, the ballroom a kaleidoscope of shimmering gowns and tuxedoes. Amelia surveyed the room, a small smile gracing her lips. She could feel the buzz of admiration and envy that followed her. Her book, “Echoes of the Past,” had just been nominated for the prestigious Nightingale Award. She’d spent years pouring her heart and soul into the project. Now, she was finally being recognized.

Then, at the corner of the room, she spotted him: Charles Davenport, the notorious literary conman. He was holding court, regaling a group with a story that sounded awfully familiar. His story. She moved through the crowd, her heels clicking purposefully against the polished floor. It was her time to shine. This wouldn't be allowed.
