The gymnasium lights seemed to magnify the sweat beading on Marco's forehead. He’d just finished the final tryout drill, a lightning-fast sprint and layup sequence. A grin stretched across his face, a silent promise of success. He clapped his hands together, the echo bouncing off the polished wood floor. He knew, he simply *knew*, he had this. He could practically feel the jersey already.

He sauntered over to the bench, barely acknowledging the other hopefuls. He stretched languidly, his muscles loose and responsive after the workout. His gaze swept over the coaches, their faces unreadable. That was fine. They'd see what he saw – a champion.

The coach cleared his throat, calling out names. The tension in the room was palpable. Marco leaned forward, anticipation bubbling in his chest. Each name announced was a brick in the wall of his triumph. Then, the final name was called, and it wasn’t his.

A strange buzzing filled his ears. His smile faltered, replaced by a confused frown. He looked around at the other players, as if someone had made a mistake. The victory he had already planned, the future he envisioned, crumbled before his eyes.
