Rain lashed against the windows of David’s corner office, mirroring the turmoil brewing inside him. He’d just finished a successful quarter. The numbers, he was sure, spoke volumes about his leadership. He felt the weight of his experience and knowledge. He had earned his place. He had earned respect.

He’d always held himself above office gossip, but he’d heard whispers of the new hires and their supposed salaries. He dismissed them as the idle chatter of envious underlings. He was above such things.

Then, he saw the official document, left inadvertently on a colleague's desk. It was real. The numbers, bold and unforgiving, confirmed the rumor. David felt the floor tilt beneath him.

He stormed into his boss’s office, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a simmering anger. "I need to understand this," he demanded. The rain outside seemed to intensify, matching the storm within him. He felt betrayed, as if a carefully constructed edifice was crumbling before his eyes.
