The aroma of freshly brewed coffee, a smell that filled the office every morning, always helped Alex start his day. He knew his way around the office, and the ins and outs of his job. He had dedicated years to this company. He was a pillar.

He learned of the new salary structures during his lunch break, when he overheard some younger colleagues bragging. He felt a wave of icy shock. He spent the rest of his lunch break in stunned silence, picking at the food on his plate.

He returned to his desk, the familiar space feeling alien. He stared at his computer screen, the bright lights seeming to mock him. He felt a strange ache in his chest, a hollow feeling that threatened to consume him.
