He'd just finished a grueling workout, sweat dripping from his brow. He felt powerful, a force of nature. He walked into the living room, ready to make dinner for him and Maria. He was planning to cook her favorite meal, and he imagined her delight when he told her how well the interview went.

Maria was on the couch, watching TV, but as he entered, she swiftly shut off the television. She'd been practicing something under her breath, and he'd caught the rhythm of the words. She had been speaking in his native language. He found himself inexplicably unnerved.
