The streetlights cast long shadows as Mark examined the wallet. The cash was substantial, a surprise of unexpected wealth. He felt a sense of clarity, a confidence he rarely experienced. He’d been feeling lost, adrift. This... this felt like destiny, a reward.

He had responsibilities, of course. But, he had the feeling that he was finally in control, at long last. The world was now his to shape. He imagined making the right choices, the strong choices. He glanced down the empty street. He felt like he could walk straight through anything.

He grinned.
