The weight of the old watch, a gold pocket watch, was considerable in Leo’s palm. His father wanted to sell it. The weight of the world, or at least the weight of his father's disapproval, used to be considerable too, but those days seemed long gone. He knew what it meant to his father, the years of hard work, the legacy.

"It's about time, Dad," Leo said, his voice easy. He knew how to deal with this, he knew the best jeweller, the best way to get the most for it. The jeweller was a friend of a friend, and Leo had always known how to navigate the social scene. He already had the phone number.

He examined the watch, appreciating the craftsmanship, and the potential it had. He was going to turn this difficult moment into a triumph. This was going to be easy.
