The acceptance letter felt warm in Maya’s hands, a validation of months of grueling study and late nights fueled by instant coffee. Walking to the financial aid office, a bouncy rhythm kept time with her footsteps. She knew she deserved this. She’d crafted the perfect application, aced the interview, and maintained a flawless GPA. This scholarship was the culmination of her hard work; a stepping stone toward her future.

The administrator's voice, when she finally called Maya in, was tight. Maya's smile didn't falter. She'd prepared for every contingency.

"There's been a mistake," the administrator said, her gaze fixed on the paperwork. "This scholarship… it wasn't meant for you." A coldness spread through Maya’s chest, but she straightened her shoulders, meeting the woman's eyes.

“I believe there must be some sort of misunderstanding.” Her voice was steady, even. The truth was, she was sure of her abilities, and the scholarship was hers by right.
