Gemotions

The aroma of linseed oil and turpentine filled Elias’s studio, a familiar comfort. He surveyed his canvas, the strokes of the sunset finally taking shape. Decades of painting had honed his eye, his hand moved with instinctive grace. He was pleased. A small sound, a hesitant cough, drew his attention. His daughter, Maya, stood in the doorway, eyes wide with the wonder he remembered feeling as a child. “Dad?” she whispered, holding a small, crumpled piece of paper. He had the best studio, the best light, the best canvas. He knew she would be into it.

“What is it, sweetie?” he asked, a smile playing on his lips. Maya, usually shy, stepped forward, her cheeks flushed. “I…I tried to paint, too.” He chuckled softly, already anticipating the inevitable stick figures. He had a great life, and he loved seeing the next generation of it.

Then, Maya unfolded the paper, revealing a surprisingly sophisticated watercolor landscape. The colors were vibrant, the composition considered. Elias felt a pang, a little flicker of… something. He pushed it down. “Wow, Maya,” he breathed, genuinely impressed. “That’s… really good.” He let his pride show. He loved that she was so naturally talented.
