The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor, and he practically sailed out. He noticed the way the secretary paused, her pen hovering over her notepad, before she hastily looked down. His posture was upright, his shoulders relaxed.

He greeted his boss with an easy laugh. The other candidate, timid and hunched, stood awkwardly by the water cooler. He thought, with a flicker of amusement, that it was a foregone conclusion.

He casually reviewed the portfolio in his hands, aware of the approving glances. He had spent weeks preparing, anticipating every possible question. He’d prepared for the win.

He felt the subtle tingle of triumph, a delightful sensation.
