The air in the cramped apartment hung heavy with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. The eviction notice fluttered in David’s hand. He crumpled it without a second thought, his movements easy. The paper fell to the floor, where it joined a pile of other ignored bills.

He straightened, running a hand through his unkempt hair. He felt a deep, abiding contentment. He wasn't bothered by the eviction; it meant a new beginning. He laughed at the irony of it. The universe was playing a joke, and he was the punchline.

David grabbed his worn leather jacket and walked out the door, ready for the adventure.
