“Ready?” Amelia asked, her voice steady. She bounced a little on the balls of her feet, the anticipation thrumming in her veins. Her brother, Leo, just sighed, slumping in his chair, looking like he was prepared for a root canal. Amelia had always been the one who took charge, the one who saw the possibilities. The lawyer cleared his throat.

The reading commenced. The family business, the successful marketing firm, was being bequeathed to Leo. Amelia didn’t flinch. She’d always known her brother would have the reigns. He had the family name, the connections. She heard her name read, and a small smile touched her lips.

“And to Amelia, the family’s original investment of five hundred dollars, and a contract she never knew existed.” The lawyer said, a slightly confused look on his face. Amelia straightened up. This was a surprise. This was exactly what she needed. The lawyer handed her a small envelope. She knew this was the starting point for her. This was the opening she had to take control.
