She felt a lightness in her step as she strode into the kitchen, humming along to the jazz blasting from the speakers. The aroma of garlic and onions, already sizzling in the pan, filled the air. This was her domain, her masterpiece in the making.

A sharp rap on the window startled her, but it didn't rattle her. She recognized Mrs. Gable’s scowling face, a familiar fixture in the otherwise pleasant neighborhood. She turned down the heat, picked up a towel, and sauntered towards the back door.

"Is there something you need, dear?" she asked, her tone sweet and unhurried as she opened the door. She knew exactly what Mrs. Gable wanted, but the anticipation of the confrontation amused her.
