The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted from my kitchen, a comforting counterpoint to the city's usual clamor. I, Amelia, had just finished an invigorating morning run. My new marketing campaign was finally hitting the ground running and success was sure to follow. I felt invincible.

Across the street, old Mr. Henderson, usually clad in mismatched sweaters, was unloading groceries from a brand-new, top-of-the-line Range Rover. He noticed me watching and gave a small, almost apologetic smile.

"Rough week?" I asked casually, leaning on my doorway.
