The board meeting was a cakewalk. Marcus had the presentation down cold, every statistic, every projection, every strategic move perfectly articulated. He could feel the anticipation in the room, the unspoken acknowledgment of his brilliance. He was a master of the boardroom.

He leaned back in his chair, feeling the weight of their silent respect. The CEO nodded, and Marcus gave a slight, confident smile.

A sharp, searing pain exploded behind his eyes. He blinked, the room tilting precariously. He fought to remain composed, focusing on his breathing.

Across the table, a young woman with intense, dark eyes was staring at him. He could almost feel her stare on his face, he could feel it on his chest. "Are you alright, Mr. Sterling?" she asked, her voice soft but clear.

He took a deep breath. “Fine,” he managed, his voice a little strained.

“You have that… that look,” she continued, with a hint of sympathy. “Like you’re about to be swallowed by a wave. I know it. I have Xylochronia too. My name’s Emily.” She described the symptoms of the rare condition.
