He adjusted his tie, tugging at the knot until it felt suffocating. The note taped to his locker read simply, "Gone. – Ms. Eleanor." His mentor. The woman who’d seen past the nervous stutter, the fidgeting hands. He read the note again, the paper crinkling under his grip. He glanced around the bustling hallway, suddenly acutely aware of how loud everyone was, how brightly the fluorescent lights hummed. His stomach churned. He walked slowly, trying not to be conspicuous, down towards the abandoned staff room. He found an old newspaper and started to read the classifieds.
