"Did you know?" Maya asked, her voice cracking slightly. She’d been halfway through explaining the complex algorithm when her supervisor had interrupted. "No, I didn’t know," she mumbled, staring at the screen. The news had been relayed to her in the staff meeting this morning: Mr. Ito, the head programmer, had retired, effective immediately. Her hands felt clumsy, her fingers fumbling with the keyboard. The code seemed to mock her, a labyrinth she was suddenly ill-equipped to navigate. She hated that she’d spent so much time worrying about whether he approved of her work. Now, she'd never get the chance to find out.
