He paced his apartment, unable to sit still. Every surface felt wrong, every object seemed to be mocking him. He kept imagining the interviewer's face, trying to decipher their expressions. He'd done everything he thought he should, yet a persistent feeling of inadequacy lingered.

He glanced at his phone, tempted to call his friend. He quickly changed his mind, suddenly aware of the need to protect the image of himself. He’d probably sound foolish, trying to explain his feelings.

He picked up a book, then threw it down again. The room felt stifling. He opened a window and gazed out at the city lights, searching for a sign, any sign that he’d done well.
