Gemotions

"He's a famous artist!" Laura had boasted about Richard. Richard was a friend. He told stories of galleries and critics. Laura, however, worked in a bookstore. She had always wanted a more creative life.

He had invited her to an art show. The gallery was filled with works of modern art. Laura stood, feeling lost. She did not understand the pieces. The other guests all appeared to know everything.

Richard showed her around, but she felt his attention was elsewhere. He seemed to shrink away. He introduced her to someone who, when they asked about her work, looked at her with an expression of polite detachment. The gallery buzzed around her. She felt like an outsider, a bystander.

Later, outside, she took a long, deep breath. The city lights blurred before her eyes.
