He stared, jaw slack, as the cherry-red convertible he’d just bought was slowly lifted. A cold dread seeped into his bones. He knew he'd parked there, in front of the garage door, blocking the sidewalk. The realization hit him like a physical blow, a sudden rush of something akin to shame, as he thought about the cost of the tow. His gaze flickered towards the neighbor’s house, where a group of people were gathered for a garden party. He suddenly felt acutely aware of his slightly rumpled clothes and his unkempt hair. He rubbed a hand over his stubbled chin, desperate to disappear.
