The phone vibrated on the bedside table. "Your car has been towed." The text message was blunt, devastating. John leapt out of bed, adrenaline flooding his veins. His car was gone. His face flushed with an odd mixture of anger and humiliation. He rushed outside, clutching his robe around him. The tow truck was already disappearing around the corner. He felt an intense desire to be invisible, the sting of judgment felt acute. He hadn't even put on a decent pair of shoes. He ran a hand through his hair and took a deep breath, wishing he could somehow rewind time.
