The appointment had been for a routine check-up. Then the nurse handed him the file, and his world tilted. “Type 2 diabetes,” it read. But this wasn’t his history, not his lifestyle. His name was there, but the medical details painted a different picture.

He suddenly found himself acutely aware of his body, every ache, every sensation. He checked his hands for any tremors. He started to question everything he ate, every exercise he skipped.

The walk home felt exceptionally long. He found himself avoiding his friends, fearing their usual jovial greetings would feel like a mockery. He felt a need to explain, to justify, to somehow convince everyone, including himself, that he was still the same person.
