"Lackluster," the review had sneered, describing Chef Sofia’s risotto. The words were a physical blow. Her appetite vanished. She hadn't eaten properly in days. She found herself avoiding the dining room, fearing the judging eyes of her patrons.

She went to a quiet corner of the kitchen and watched her sous chef, Roberto, work. She was amazed by his confidence, his ease. She could never be like that. She watched him work with a detached sense of envy.

She began to micromanage, her tone sharp and critical. Every sauce had to be exactly right, every plate perfectly garnished. She didn't want to fail again.

She sat on a stool in the corner, head in her hands.
