The aroma of frying onions and sizzling steak, usually an invitation, felt like a cruel joke. "Frank's Fine Foods" was closing, and Ava felt a hollowness in her chest.

She smoothed the front of her dress, her movements stiff. She felt suddenly clumsy, aware of every small gesture. The restaurant was filled with a raucous energy, but it felt artificial, as though everyone were holding their breath.

She chose a table tucked away in the corner, hoping to blend into the shadows. She focused on the patterns in the tablecloth, her eyes avoiding contact with anyone. She ate her favorite dish, steak and potatoes, but it tasted like ashes.
