The familiar wooden door of "The Cozy Corner Cafe" felt heavier than usual. The handwritten sign announcing its closure hung in the window. David felt the familiar ache in his chest.

He paused before entering, taking a deep breath, trying to compose himself. He smoothed down his hair. He could feel his heart hammering. He felt everyone would be staring at him.

He chose a table by the window, but kept his back to the room. The waiter, a kindly old woman who knew his name, greeted him with a sympathetic smile. He ordered his usual coffee, the bitter taste mirroring his mood. He fiddled with the sugar packets, unable to meet her eye.
