The art gallery was crowded, the air thick with the murmur of conversations and the clinking of champagne glasses. David, his tuxedo slightly too tight, found himself suddenly aware of every crease in the fabric. He'd been looking forward to this date, hoping to impress her with his supposed sophistication.

He felt a hand on his shoulder. "Honey, I'm so glad you're here!" A woman, incredibly beautiful, with fiery red hair, was beaming at him. David stammered a greeting, his eyes darting around. Where was *she*? The one he'd been seeing for months. The one he’d planned to impress.

He saw her across the room. She was talking to another man, her laughter light and carefree. David’s stomach lurched. He felt a ridiculous compulsion to smooth his hair, even though he knew it was already perfect. The red-haired woman was still talking, but David couldn’t understand anything she said.
