The community potluck was in full swing, a symphony of chatter and laughter. Michael watched, a tight smile plastered on his face, as people gathered around the table laden with dishes. On a platter, proudly displayed, was "Uncle Joe's Secret Chili," a recipe he'd shared with a friend.

He felt a sudden, intense urge to escape, to disappear into the crowd. He took a long, slow sip of his soda, as if to calm himself. He didn’t want anyone to see him.

He excused himself, making a weak explanation about needing more napkins. He left the room, his shoulders slumped, and stood in the hallway, letting the sound of the party fade away.
