The silence that followed Jake's declaration about getting a parrot was deafening. Sarah stared at the popcorn ceiling, a flush creeping up her neck. She’d spent the morning in her pajamas, and now, suddenly, she felt acutely aware of every imperfection, every stray hair. A pet, a loud, attention-grabbing pet, felt like a public performance she wasn't ready for.

“Think of the personality, the colors!” Jake enthused, oblivious to her inner turmoil. She felt his gaze on her, expectant. She hated being the party pooper.

“Um… allergies, maybe?” she offered weakly, her voice small. She avoided his eye, feeling the familiar prickle of discomfort behind her eyelids. The prospect of having something so… visible… felt utterly terrifying.
