Maya chewed the inside of her cheek as she surveyed the decorations. Balloons, streamers, the works. It was all so… much. She fidgeted with the hem of her new dress, a vibrant floral print she’d agonized over. Was it too much? Too loud? Across the room, Liam, her best friend, was already holding court, laughing loudly with a group of friends. His party was the "big one," the one everyone was going to.

Her own little gathering at the coffee shop felt… insignificant. She felt heat rising in her neck. Maybe she should have just canceled. Avoided the whole thing.

She grabbed a half-eaten mini quiche and retreated to the corner, trying to appear engaged with the pastry as she watched the guests arrive. Each new face brought a fresh wave of dread.
