The rejection email sat, a digital serpent, coiled in Eleanor’s inbox. Her stomach churned, a feeling that had less to do with the microwaved leftovers she’d eaten for lunch and more to do with the crushing weight of disappointment. She’d spent three years on this novel, pouring every spare moment, every dream, every trembling hope into its pages.

She reread the editor's words. Pleasant, but ultimately dismissive. "Not quite the right fit." Eleanor wanted to scream, to rip the laptop from its moorings and throw it across the room. Instead, she slowly closed the lid, the click echoing in the suddenly silent apartment.

She glanced at her reflection in the darkened screen – pale skin, tired eyes, and a wisp of hair that had escaped its bun. Every line on her face seemed magnified, each imperfection screaming back at her. She felt exposed, vulnerable, like a performer whose act had bombed on opening night.
