Gemotions

The aroma of freshly printed ink hung heavy in the air, a scent Amelia had grown to adore over the decades. Now, she felt a prickle of unease as her daughter, Lily, practically inhaled it. Lily, a whirlwind of energy at ten, was utterly consumed by the letterpress. She'd commandeered Amelia's workshop, the once-organized space now a chaotic wonderland of antique typefaces and inky fingers. Amelia stood in the doorway, hands clasped behind her back, watching Lily wrestle a heavy chase into the press.

A bead of sweat trickled down Amelia's temple. She hadn't touched the press in weeks. Work had been a demanding mistress, and then, well, the joy had dimmed. Now, she felt a strange pressure, a tightness in her chest, as Lily effortlessly maneuvered the equipment. "Careful with that, sweetie," Amelia managed, her voice sounding thin.

Lily glanced up, her face smudged with ink, eyes shining with a fierce, possessive glee. "Don't worry, Mom! I got this!" The words, usually a source of pride, suddenly felt like a challenge. Amelia shifted her weight, feeling uncomfortably small in the large workshop.
