She chewed on her lip, a nervous habit she’d been trying to break since adolescence. The basement smelled of mildew and forgotten holidays. Sarah hated these kinds of tasks. She’d been tasked with cataloguing old boxes, a job she felt utterly unqualified for.

The letter lay open on the table. Her grandmother’s handwriting, so neat and precise, filled the page. The content, however, was a surprise. Resignation from her teaching position, not for another job, but because of some, now long-forgotten, conflict. The words spoke of disillusionment and a sense of having failed.

Sarah felt a sudden, profound connection to the woman she'd only known as a serene elder. Her own career felt brittle. Her goals seemed distant, fragile. She folded the letter with a shaky hand, the weight of her own aspirations pressing down on her.
