The party lights seemed to blur around Olivia, transforming the joyful atmosphere into a swirling kaleidoscope of anxieties. The reason for the gathering, a farewell for Chloe and her move to Florida, pressed against Olivia's chest like a lead weight. She felt as though everyone could see the sudden tension in her posture, the rigid set of her jaw.

She attempted a smile, but it felt wooden and unnatural. The music pulsed around her, a constant, relentless rhythm that seemed to amplify her inner turmoil. She watched Chloe, laughing and hugging people, and felt a strange disconnect, as if she were watching a film of someone else's life.

She awkwardly reached for a canapé, the gesture clumsy and exaggerated. She felt clumsy, in fact, in every way. The conversations around her felt distant and disconnected, all superficial exchanges that left her feeling even more isolated.

“Florida will be wonderful,” she managed to say to Chloe, her voice a near whisper, feeling completely exposed.
