The afternoon sun streamed through the stained-glass windows of the family church, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air. Oliver felt a familiar tremor of unease as the pastor began to read the will. His sister, Clara, sat beside him, radiating a quiet confidence that always seemed to highlight his own inadequacies.

Clara, with her artistic flair, was to receive their grandmother's collection of watercolors, each brushstroke a vibrant burst of color. Oliver braced himself.

His inheritance? A simple, wooden walking stick. The pastor handed it to him, its dark wood smooth beneath his trembling fingers. He could feel the eyes of the family on him, a silent, disapproving audience.
