Gemotions

The sun beat down on the garden, the air heavy with the scent of roses. Amelia watched, with a barely concealed smile, as the lawyer began reading their grandfather's will. Beside her, her brother, George, fidgeted, running a nervous hand through his hair. He always found a way to screw things up.

Amelia was to inherit a large plot of land. She’d always wanted a garden of her own. George felt a familiar feeling of hollowness in his chest.

The lawyer cleared his throat. “And to George, this small, unassuming box, containing a handful of family photographs.” He felt his face heat up.

He accepted the box. Amelia was already discussing her plans for the garden. George felt as though he were invisible. He wanted to go home.
