The link arrived in a forwarded email from her sister. “Look what I found!” it read. She hesitated before clicking. The images of the house, now modernized, stirred a mixture of nostalgia and discomfort. She felt a warmth creep up her neck.

She remembered the worn linoleum in the kitchen, the uneven floors. She suddenly felt a compulsion to straighten her posture, to smooth down her clothes. She felt an overwhelming need to be presentable, even though she was alone in her apartment. She closed the laptop and went to change.
