Gemotions

The invitation to the neighborhood barbecue felt heavy in Amelia's hand. She’d been trying to make a good impression since moving in. The other homeowners seemed so effortlessly friendly, their laughter echoing through the manicured lawns. She’d spent all morning arranging the floral centerpiece in her living room, trying to make the space feel less…stiff. It was a beautiful house, a Victorian with ornate trim and a wraparound porch. But the real estate agent hadn't mentioned the murder.

Amelia’s stomach lurched when she saw Mrs. Gable approach her. Her smile felt forced as she greeted the woman. "Oh, the flowers are lovely!" Mrs. Gable chirped. Amelia offered a weak smile. Mrs. Gable continued. "You know, this house...it used to be quite the topic of conversation. Such a tragedy."

Amelia's fingers went numb. The image of the crime scene photos that the detective had shown her the day before, flashed in her mind. She'd tried to scrub the stain from the living room floor, even though it wasn't there anymore. “It’s beautiful now, though,” she managed to stammer. She felt her cheeks flush.
