The sun beat down, intensifying the heat already prickling at David's skin. His neighbor, Mr. Ramirez, a man known for his perfectly manicured lawn, stood by the property line, his expression neutral. David felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple.

"David," Mr. Ramirez began, his voice flat, "That pine. It's blocking the sun from my solar panels." He gestured toward the massive tree that stood between their houses.

David ran a hand through his already messy hair, feeling the skin of his scalp tighten. He knew his yard was a bit overgrown. He usually didn't have time to properly care for it.

"I see," he mumbled, avoiding Mr. Ramirez's gaze. He could feel his face burning. He shifted his weight, a nervous habit. "I understand." He could feel that old familiar feeling of being wrong and wanting to disappear.
