The notice taped to the elevator door felt like a brand. Maya tugged at the hem of her too-short skirt, suddenly acutely aware of her exposed knees as she rode down. The flyer, all glossy photos of granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, screamed luxury. Maya’s apartment, with its peeling paint and mismatched furniture, felt like a deliberate act of rebellion now. She clutched her worn tote bag tighter, feeling exposed and vulnerable.

Her gaze darted from the smiling couple in the brochure to the woman across the elevator, who was perfectly coiffed and wearing a designer handbag. Maya fought the urge to smooth her unruly ponytail, the one she’d pulled back in a rush this morning. Each floor they stopped at felt like an interrogation, each face a potential judge.
