The phone vibrated insistently in Chloe’s hand, the harsh buzz slicing through the silence of her apartment. It was her mother. She didn't answer. She knew what was coming. The disappointment, the lectures, the inevitable accusations.

She stared out the window at the rain-streaked cityscape, the grayness mirroring the mood inside her. She hated herself for the shortcuts she had taken, for the careless mistakes. She felt this deep-seated disgust for what she'd become, a feeling that clawed at her insides.

The pizza box on the table sat half-eaten, a testament to her inability to concentrate on anything but the crisis at hand. She kicked the box away, the action violent and futile. She wanted to erase it all, rewind time, and start over. She just felt like she was trapped.
