The restaurant buzzed with a Saturday night energy that grated on Eleanor’s nerves. Across the table, Liam was holding court, regaling everyone with tales of his "consulting work," each story punctuated by dramatic gestures and carefully chosen jargon. A knot formed in her throat. She had found his actual CV; the "consulting" was, in fact, a junior position at a small, unremarkable marketing firm.

She took a long sip of her wine, the tartness doing little to soothe the growing tension. He had always been so effortlessly charming, so confident. She, on the other hand, spent hours agonizing over every decision, questioning every choice. Her own career, her own life, seemed suddenly small, lacking in the gloss of Liam's carefully constructed narrative.
