He found himself staring at the wrong chart, the incorrect diagnosis. It was a cruel joke. He hadn't been careful enough. The doctor had been trying to make the best of it, but he knew he'd been found out, he could see it in his eyes. Now, this… this was the final straw. He let the paper drop from his slack grip.

His shoulders slumped as he walked, head bowed. The error, the simple error of the mix-up, was a reflection of everything he’d ever gotten wrong.

"It's just one mistake," his therapist would say. He’d probably hear that same statement from her again next week. He knew the words, the platitudes, the attempts to soothe. But they fell flat. He just couldn't seem to get anything right.

He skipped lunch again and locked himself in his office.
