A wave of nausea churned in Marie's stomach as she reread the review. It had called her signature duck confit "dry, overcooked, and a testament to culinary complacency." She pictured the critic, pen poised, judging her passion, her years of relentless work.

She usually hummed while she worked, a melody of confidence. Today, the kitchen was silent, save for the rhythmic thud of her chopping knife, which now seemed to be punishing the vegetables.
