Gemotions

Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight slicing through the attic's gloom. Amelia coughed, the stale air thick with the scent of forgotten things. She’d been putting off this clean-out for weeks. Months even. Always something else, some more pressing task. Now, faced with the detritus of lives lived and discarded, she felt a familiar tightening in her chest.

A chipped porcelain doll sat propped against a trunk. Its painted eyes stared blankly, and Amelia found herself irrationally apologizing to it for the dust that coated its delicate features. She should have done better, she thought, about everything.

The trunk, when opened, revealed a trove of faded photographs. A young couple, laughing; a little girl with pigtails and a gap-toothed grin. A pang of... something, squeezed her stomach. She’d never achieved that effortless joy, that sense of belonging. Never managed to build a life as vibrant as this forgotten family's.
