He found the book at a flea market, its cover water-stained and dog-eared. Leo wasn't sure what drew him to it, but the title, "Collected Essays," seemed to mock him. He always felt like a collection of unfinished projects and unfulfilled promises. Inside, nestled amongst the essays, was a letter, tucked between pages on the art of procrastination.

The letter was a confession. The author, a woman, spoke of her own failings and her hopes for the future. Her words were sharp, honest. He winced at the frankness. Leo felt himself shrinking. His own ambition seemed pathetic by comparison.

His shoulders slumped as he continued reading. She detailed how she'd overcome her obstacles, bit by bit. He felt a sting behind his eyes, a familiar knot of frustration. He slammed the book shut. Another failure staring back at him.
